School Excursions

So much space, for Everyone

One of the main objectives of the GDC is to provide engaging and informative science education through school excursions and incursions. During a visit to our centre, students will be guided through our galleries and be inspired by age and year level appropriate science. 

We facilitate day time school excursions of our centre, night time visits to our observatory and a combination of both.

To request an excursion to our Centre for your School/Education Group please download the booking form below.  

Submit your completed form to bookings@gravitycentre.com.au at least two weeks prior to your requested date/s.

Our Team will review and coordinate confirmation of your booking.

Please note – due to staffing limitations we are not able to offer excursions throughout School Holidays – during which time we invite Groups to schedule a self-guided tour.

Rocket Science Made Easy

“YES! It IS Rocket Science!” 

Take students on a journey through the fascinating science of rocketry. From the history of rockets to Newton’s Three Laws of Motion, this program explores how rockets work, the famous Rocket Equation and the challenges of orbital and escape velocities.

We’ll also look ahead at the future of space travel, exploring the technologies being developed to take humanity to the planets and beyond.

 

Why It works for Schools

This program supports STEM learning outcomes while making rocket science exciting, approachable and inspiring for students.

 

Suitable for: Yr 10 – 12 General Science and Physics Students

Duration: 50-minutes per session

*This does NOT include Rocket Making

Hands-On Rocket Science

Give students the chance to step into the role of a rocket scientist in this fun, interactive session.

Students will:

  • Explore the basic principles of rocketry, 
  • See Newton’s Laws in action
  • Learn how rockets are designed and how rocket motors function
  • Build and launch their own water-powered bottle rockets

 

Why It works for Schools

By combining theory with hands-on learning, this program makes physics and engineering memorable and funwhile giving students the thrill of launching their own rocket.

 

Suitable for: Yr 4 – Yr 12 General Science

Duration: 50-minute per session

*Students may need to supply 1.25L bottle

The Big Questions...


The 'Big Bang' and Beyond

Why are we here? Where did we come from?
These timeless questions lie at the heart of science and astronomy. This program invites students to journey back to the  beginning of space and time and explore the origins and destiny of the universe.

 

Students Will Discover:

  • What the Big Bang was, and when it happened
  • The evidence that supports the Big Bang theory
  • The science of cosmology
  • Possible futures of the universe

 

Why It Works for Schools
This program encourages critical thinking and curiosity, helping students connect scientific evidence with humanity’s biggest questions.

 

Suitable for: Yr 9 – Yr 12 General Science and Yr 11 & 12 Physics Students

Duration:  50-minutes per session

Journey through the Solar System


Set out on an adventure across our cosmic neighbourhood—from the blazing Sun to distant Pluto, the Kuiper Belt and beyond.

 

Students Will Explore:

  • Our Sun, the engine of the solar system
  • The rocky Terrestrial Planets
  • The mighty Gas and Ice Giants
  • Moons, asteroids, and minor planets

 

Special Experience:
Students also have the chance to safely observe the Sun (weather permitting) through our dedicated solar telescope.

 

Why It Works for Schools
Perfect for Years 3-7, this program can be tailored to different year levels, offering a balance of scientific learning and awe-inspiring discovery.

Newton V's Einstein:

The Story of Gravity

Gravity: the invisible and great sculptor of the cosmos. From keeping our feet on the ground to guiding planets around stars, gravity is one of nature’s most fascinating powers.

 

Students Will Explore:

  • Newton’s Universal Law of Gravitation and its role in physics
  • Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity, showing gravity as the bending of spacetime due to mass
  • How these ideas explain the birth of stars, planetary orbits, black holes and the structure of the universe

 

Why It Works for Schools
This program blends history, physics, and astronomy into one story. It helps students see how scientific ideas evolve—and how human imagination has unlocked the hidden architecture of the cosmos.

Astronomy Field Nights

"Bringing the Universe to You..."

Experience the night sky like never before with our popular Astronomy Field Night (AFN)

Our team of highly experienced astronomers brings large, portable telescopes directly to your school or community group, transforming your location into a gateway to the stars.
