The Gravity Discovery Centre & Observatory, together with the Shire of Gingin are working to protect and preserve one of the greatest natural resources and attractions that Gingin Shire has to offer – the stunning night sky.
The proposed Gingin Dark Sky Reserve will include the entire Shire of Gingin, plus smaller areas of the Shire of Chittering and the City of Wanneroo that will encompass an area of over 3500 square kilometres.
This project will seek to;
- Provide the Shire of Gingin with accreditation as an International Dark Sky
Reserve from the International Dark Sky Association (IDA). The First in WA.
- Attract local, national, and international tourists to the region and encourage
them to “stay awhile,” utilise local accommodation, and explore the many
attractions the Shire of Gingin has to offer.
It will also attract further astronomical and space assets to the region putting
Gingin on the world Astronomical Science and Tourism Map.
- Protect Local Aboriginal Cultural Heritage by preserving the ancient Yued
Noongar “Sky Stories” associated with the stars and Milky Way.
- Provide protection of local flora and fauna by creating a dark, nocturnal
environment in which different animals, birds, insects and amphibians can
continue to live within the precious eco-system unique to this region.
The Gravity Discovery Centre will be hosting a Virtual Town Hall Meeting which will give the opportunity for Gingin residents and local business owners to learn more about the proposed Gingin Dark Sky Reserve, and the benefits and opportunities of living in a Dark Sky Community.
